The Exam, Step by Step

Your visit follows the same sequence every time. Identification and immunization records are reviewed first. Dr. Weiss then completes the physical examination required for Form I-693 — general health, eyes and ears, heart and lungs, abdomen, skin, and a neurological check. Blood and urine samples are taken on-site for the mandatory laboratory tests, and tuberculosis screening is done during the same appointment. We close by confirming exactly which vaccinations USCIS requires for someone of your age, and which ones your existing records already satisfy. Plan on roughly thirty minutes in the office.

What to Bring With You

Bring an unexpired government-issued photo ID — a passport is ideal, though a driver's license is accepted. Bring every vaccination or immunization record you can locate, in any language; complete records frequently save patients from repeating vaccines they have already received. If you have ever had a positive tuberculosis test or been treated for TB, bring that documentation, and bring a list of any prescription medications you take. If you already have a printed Form I-693, bring it unsigned — USCIS requires that you sign it in the civil surgeon's presence. You are welcome to bring an interpreter or a family member.

How Long Your Sealed I-693 Stays Valid

This is the question we are asked most, and the answer is not what most websites still say. A Form I-693 signed on or after November 1, 2023 does not expire on a calendar date the way older forms did. Since June 11, 2025, however, USCIS treats the form as valid only for the application it accompanied — it cannot be reused for a different or future filing, and a denied or withdrawn case means starting the medical exam over. Forms signed before November 1, 2023 still follow the previous two-year rule. If you are applying from Fair Lawn, time your exam to your filing rather than getting ahead of it.
